United States Deputy Secretary of Transportation
Deputy Secretary of Transportation Victor Mendez has served in his role since July 30, 2014. As deputy secretary, Mendez has been focused on ensuring the safety and efficiency of America’s transportation system and assisting in its role with economic development. Mendez is the department of transportation’s chief operating officer and is responsible for day-to-day operations of the 10 modal administrations and the work of more than 55,000 USDOT employs nationwide and overseas.
Mendez previously served as the director of the Arizona Department of Transportation and, since 2009, as the administrator of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). During his time with FHWA, Mendez helped launch the Every Day Counts initiative, which gives states a range of tools and technologies to streamline construction projects and make them more cost effective. He has earned a degree in civil engineering, as well as an MBA, and is a registered professional engineer in Arizona.
